Meet Our Horses

Al Capony
Al Capony is a spunky Quarter Horse/ Appaloosa cross.  He has a lot of personality and likes it best when there’s a lot going on at the barn.  Al is a wonderful therapeutic pony and a star of the Community Lesson Program.  He came to Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding from a local pony ride company.
BlackjackPhoto by CC Paul Blackjack (“Jack in the Box“) is also a Quarter Horse.  He is quiet, sensitive, gentle and perfect for our therapeutic students learning more independant riding skills.  Blackjack’s smooth movement makes him a pleasure for first-time riders.
Casper

Casper (“Lunar Eclipse“), an Appaloosa/Percheron cross, is truly a gentleman. He is a well-loved member of the therapeutic team and the primary vaulting horse for the Sea Island Vaulters. Casper has also recently competed in dressage and eventing- he moves and carries himself beautifully.  Thanks to Sheila Chesney for donating the use of Casper to Charleston Area Therapeutic Riding.

Charlie (“Lucky Charm“) is a Pony of America.  He is dependable, calm and as cute as a button!  Public school groups love Charlie’s bouncy trot, and his patience for children and their wiggles seems boundless. Charlie is a fabulous show pony, and he teaches his riders to have confidence.  Thanks to Beth Perkins for donating the use of Charlie to CATR.

Gitane

Gitane (“Shadowfax“), a Canadian Warmblood, is a proud mother of four!  She is the lovely lady of the barn, and she impresses her riders with her broad powerful stride.  Gitane’s strong back and vibrant energy make her an indispensable member of the CATR team.  CATR is grateful to the McShane family for donating the use of Gitane to the program.

Greystone

Greystone is CATR’s showy little Welsh Pony.  He loves to go, and he would jump the moon if his rider asked him to. Greystone is the first choice for small riders, and he looks like a little polar bear cub with his furry winter coat! Greystone was donated to CATR by Helen Clements.

Mitch

Mitch (“End of the Rainbow“) is CATR’s poster pony- he loves to pose for the camera! Mitch is a Haflinger pony, and he is famous around the barn for his long eyelashes and smiling eyes.  He gives his riders lots of lateral movement and is a wonderful learn-to-canter pony.  The Buckner family donates the use of Mitch to CATR.

Mini Mouse

Mouse (“Mini Mouse“) is an elegant Salle Francais mare. She loves to show off, but she is also patient and sweet. Mouse is an excellent mount for nervous riders because of her gentle nature.  Riders love her flowing, rhythmic trot. Mouse was donated to CATR by Sharon Kofmehl.

Raldiene (Diene) is a spunky, charming Norwegian Fjord pony. Students love her dorsal stripe and her feminine face. Diene is a fast learner – she has become an excellent vaulting pony for both therapeutic riding and community lesson students. CATR is very thankful to Laura Mateo for donating the use of this wonderful pony.

Samantha

Samantha (“Appy of my Eye“) is an Appaloosa mare.  She may be a little flirtatious with the geldings in the paddock next door, but she is truly unflappable under saddle.  Sam doesn’t mind loud noises or a lot of movement from her riders.  She is also calm and well-behaved at horse shows.  Riders love her rocking horse-like canter.

Shonaugh has quickly become a favorite pony here at CATR.  She loves to canter and jump, and she is quite well behaved in hand.  With her peppy energy and predictable demeanor, Shonaugh is a versatile member of the team.  CATR again thanks Laura Mateo for donating the use of Shonaugh.
headshot of Woodstock Woodstock is a big, strong Belgian/Paint cross. Woodstock has become a great addition to the CATR family with his “gentle giant” personality. CATR thanks Bonnie Bomba for donating the use of this great horse.
